Hiking area San Genesio (Salto) - South Tyrol

Gasthof Wieser in Nobls at San Genesio is a popular day trip destination for hikers. It is located at 1,396 meters above sea level beneath the Salten, the hiking plateau at Tschögglberg in South Tyrol.

Countless marked trails, easy walks on the Salten, the largest larch meadows in Europe, are right outside our front door to you. From the crocus bloom in spring to the coloring of the larch trees in autumn, always a popular hiking destination for families with prams, the elderly or for those seeking relaxation urbanite. Our lake, 100 meters from his own farm, invites you to linger after a long hike, rest and of course for swimming.
Our inn on 1396 m above sea level is a wonderful point of rest for hikers. The Salto high plateau and its surroundings are an appreciated hiking area.

This area is worth a visit especially in autumn, it is particularly fascinating when the larch trees become yellow-golden and in spring when the meadows are covered by a wonderful violet-white sea of crocuses. Families with strollers and even seniors find the right place for a pleasant hike.

Swim and relax at our small lake, not far away from our farm, after a fulfilled day.
Below our courtyard is the"Wieser Lahn".Clear the red clay of the great landslide of pastures and meadows takes off and the Pyramids emerge. The Lahn is the area of origin of Magarethenbaches, of up to Siebeneich (Terlano) flows down, where once a brick factory stood. Read the to traditional interesting Forecast for Wieser Lahn.

The Martinsweg,a 3 km long trail, suitable for children and inspired by nature in Glaning, is an ideal excursion tip especially in autumn to Törggele.

In Jenesien,the capital, there is the outdoor swimming pool, a climbing center, tennis court and small stores for shopping. But South Tyrol city of Bolzano with its Old Town, the Ötzi Museum and the Christmas market during the Christmas season as well as the spa town of Merano with the spa and the gardens of Schloss Trauttmansdorff are worth a visit. Take the cable car to get from San Genesio to Bolzano. A wonderful experience and breathtaking views await you. On request we pick you up at the bus station or cable car station Genesio.

The “Wieserlahn”
Below our farm you can find the so-called Wieserlahn (“Lahn” stands for a landslide) with countless earth pyramids. These are a special natural phenomenon that comes about in particular terrain, usually after a landslide or an unhinging of the earth. Usually the pyramids are formed in terrain very well sheltered from wind so that they cannot be damaged by it. The creek “Margarethes” starts here and runs down to the valley until the location Settequerce, a part of the village Terlano, there a very long time ago, stood a brick factory. The St. Martin’s-path
This path is a 3 km long circular route in the small village Cologna. This child-friendly, spiritual path is worth a visit specially when we are celebrating a South Tyrolean culinary tradition called „Törggelen“

The small village San Genesio is waiting for you. Here you can make a trip to the open air swimming pool, the climbing hall and bouldering and to lots of small shops. In the city Bolzano there are shopping possibilities with an wonderful flair as well as traditions of the region and cultural events for you. You can visit one of the numerous museum, like the famous South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology (home to Ötzi – the Iceman ) or the Museum for Natural History. Especially in Christmas time the city Bolzano have a unique flair and impresses with charm and its casual, chilled attitude to life. If you want enjoy a amazing view you can take the cable way to Bolzano - an unique experience. In the city Merano you can visit the Terme Merano or the world-famous botanic gardens of Trauttmansdorff which are a particularly interesting highlight. Upon request we pick you up at the bus station or cable way station in San Genesio, only 6 km far away from our farm.

A circular trail from our inn to the Salto highland

Start directly from our inn, hike beyond endless meadows with a magnificent panoramic view of the Dolomites till you reach the village San Genesio. There you can turn back to our inn. A beautiful hike in spring and also in winter.

Something special on the way

The legends trail on the Salto highland
This beautiful trail was created by the children of the San Genesio primary school. Here you can discover 12 legends of the area around San Genesio. Each station consists of a description in 3 different languages, pictures, dolls, wooden columns and mytical creatures.

The french wayside cross
In the wood below the farm “Wietererhof” on path 33/A a wayside cross with pictures and inscriptions reminds on a military conflict between French troops and Tyrolean „Schützen“ during the Napoleonic period on 2nd November 1809. Here died eleven „Schützen“ and also the "Schützen"-captain Peter Thalguter from the village Lagundo.

The “Locher Lahn” or “Leck”
“Lahn” describes a landslide in the South Tyrolean dialect. On the path 33/a near the inn “Locher" you can find a small stream with just a little bit of water in the summer. By a careful observation of the yellow-red sandstone you will admire charred plant fossils from the Late Permian, before about 250 million years ago.

From San Genesio to the city Bolzano

No matter what you prefer: walk comfortably or conquer some difficult vie ferrate. Here you find all of that! You will love to exercise this activities in this great surrounding. You start this hike from Avigna passing beautiful meadows and a modern via ferrata. There are steel cables along the rock to help you through the hardest parts. When you have overcome this challenge you will reach the growing grapes of the farms “ Goldegghöfen”. There you will have a very amazing eye-catching: endless vineyard-terraces that slopes from the castle hill of Rafenstein to the basin of the city Bolzano. This hiking tour is popular in spring and autumn when you don't need to worry about snow in the mountains. By the way you can also experience a great panoramic view of the valley. You certainly will be delighted by this breathtaking nature.
Knottnkino Salten

A hike to the rock cinema „Knottnkino“

The name „Knotten“ means rock in the South Tyrolean dialect. From the car park of the Inn Alpenrose in Verano you can reach the panoramic view in about half an hour’ by foot, following the path number 12.
On 1465 m above sea level are placed numerous cinema chairs out of steel and chestnut-wood on the mountains over Merano. Sit down and enjoy the scenery with a amazing panoramic view of the Dolomites, the Texel Group and the whole Adige Valley. This film is created solely by nature itself without advertising breaks. A magnificent, unforgettable panoramic view.

Hiking in winter

Get out into the fresh air, enjoy the white winter wonder landscapes and inhale deeply. That does wonders - you'll see! A horse-drawn sleigh ride through the forest will make your winter holiday at the Tschöggelberg an unforgettable experience. We have a tip for all peoples who search an intense outdoor experience: Snow shoe walking. A wonderful excursion along the mountain ridge or through the woods covered in deep snow are a real highlight.  San Genesio and its surroundings (for example Merano 2000 or the Sarentino Valley) have plenty to offer winter activities. If you want you can borrow our sled for a fantastic winter experience. A lot of fun for the whole family! The winter wonderland is right here waiting for you.
